Everything started longs ago on the banks of the Bisenzio river<\/strong> to the North of Prato city centre. Thank to creation of a weir\u00a0<\/strong> to exploit the energy of the river and the 53 kilometers of millstreams<\/strong> crossing the city center, the number of textile mills built rose dramatically, from one in 1033 to 66 in 1296.<\/p>\n

Textile mills are woven into the landscape of Prato<\/strong>, they are essential to its identity, history and culture.<\/p>\n

This experience starts with the visit of the \u201cCavalciotto\u201d medieval weir<\/strong>, a key component of the complex water system.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A couple of steps away from the above mentioned weir, a stunning example of urban regeneration<\/strong>, an ancient mill, also known as Abatoni, has been converted<\/strong> to residential use.<\/p>\n

This experience offers something unique<\/strong>, the opportunity to admire the textile mill of Coiano<\/strong> (la gualchiera di Coiano), a perfectly preserved gem of industrial archeology<\/strong> still housing textile machinery dating back to the Industrial Revolution.<\/p>\n

This tour follows the Bisenzio river and ends with the visit of the Textile museum, an other amazing example of urban regeneration.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nEntrance fee for Textile Museum is 8 Euro per personper person (children until 7 are free, children 11-17 are Euro 5 with valid ID showing age) to be paid directly at the museum entrance. <\/em>
